Invitation to Tender: for research into policy and provision for social and emotional skills in the UK
Nesta is looking for a research team or agency to review system-level education policies on social and emotional skills, and explore how these are interpreted and acted on by state secondary schools across two or more of the devolved UK education systems. The researcher/s will also explore schools’ provision for social and emotional skills in these systems.
Research has consistently demonstrated the importance of social and emotional skills to young people’s success, both now and in the future. At Nesta, our Future of Skills report highlighted the value of interpersonal skills to the future of work, and extensive research has identified a link between social and emotional skills and young people’s long-term outcomes.
To grow Nesta’s work in this area, we want to learn more about what policy and provision for social and emotional skills looks like in the different UK education systems.
Through this research, our overall aim is to understand more about:
•What system-level education policies are in place to guide provision for social and emotional skills in England, Wales, Scotland and/or Northern Ireland.
•How state secondary schools interpret and respond to policies on social and emotional skills, and the provision they offer students as part of this response.
•The factors that influence schools’ choice and selection of provision, particularly the extent to which schools engage with evidence when planning.
•How the wider sector, especially external providers, can better meet schools’ and students’ needs.
So that we can:
•Deliver more effective practical funding programmes that help develop young people’s skills and better meet the needs and priorities of schools.
•Deliver more effective programmes across the devolved UK systems.
•Develop better evidence-based policy recommendations for UK governments, and recommendations for external providers working with schools.
