West Limerick Tourism Gateway
Newcastle West is the main county town in West Limerick and is emerging with its own tourism identity. Limerick City and County Council wish to commission a Feasibility Study and Masterplan on a proposed “West Limerick Tourism Gateway”. The aim of this project is to develop a tourism experience of scale in the town centre of Newcastle West based on a distinctive concept and brand and, in the longer-term, to make a transformative impact on the economic, social and cultural development of Newcastle West and the wider hinterland of West Limerick. Newcastle West will become a destination in its own right, like Adare and Westport, and provide a coherent link to other tourism products across West Limerick. The tourism concept will link into new trends in tourism – e.g., the concept of “Localhood”, be consistent with the thinking / strategies of Fáilte Ireland and incorporated into their broader marketing and promotion campaigns. The Fáilte Ireland concept of “Signature Experience”/ experiential tourism is relevant to this project as it seeks to create a coherent set of individual experiences and propositions throughout West Limerick that will allow the tourist to immerse themselves in a place. ”Signature experience” development will be a key principle underpinning the plan development and subsequent phases.
