The Aims of the Lymphoedema Service
The Community Lymphoedema Service will provide a comprehensive, community based service for all patients with Lymphoedema, chronic oedema and lipoedema, regardless of cause, with access to appropriate treatment nearer to their homes, hence avoiding hospital treatments and improving the patient’s quality of life:
The service will provide the highest quality treatment and an advisory and support service to patients with oedema, in order to prepare the patient for long-term independence, and to improve the quality of life for lymphoedema and chronic oedema patients.
The service will be a resource to promote the management of oedema, providing specialist advice and education to health care professionals commonly encountering this condition.
Patients at risk of lymphoedema need to know why they are at risk, what treatments are available and what to do should they develop lymphoedema and who to contact. This will be done through an organised education programme available to all health care professionals in raising awareness of lymphoedema within Sussex, including GPs, Practice Nurses, Community Nurses, Vascular, Oncology, Palliative care, Podiatry, Tissue Viability, Dermatology and Radiology teams.
