Description of the goods or services required
The Motherwell Theatre pantomime has been running every year since 1971.
The proposed new contract is for three (3) years (from the 2012/2013 season) with the possibility of a two (2) year extension.
The proposed titles for the first three (3) years of this contract are Aladdin; Sleeping Beauty; and Cinderella (but Sleeping Beauty can be negotiated).
The Motherwell Theatre pantomime usually opens with an evening preview performance for invited guests on the third Saturday in November and opens to the public the following Monday.
The production runs for five (5) weeks – paid for by North Lanarkshire Council – and a sixth week as a 70/30 split in favour of the production company.
North Lanarkshire Council is considering the option to present the entire production run on a percentage split basis.
A sample performance schedule is available in Appendix 2.
The theatre will be available for get-in and rehearsals from the second Sunday in November (i.e. the Sunday before the preview performance). Additional rehearsal space can be made available prior to the get-in.
Scottish pantomime is steeped in its own traditions and Motherwell Theatre prides itself on using Scottish talent to maintain these traditions. Whilst keeping the genre fresh, relevant and exciting for today’s family audience, we use a traditional ‘variety’ approach, with big opening and finale production numbers to maintain theatrical traditions and to retain the original experience of live theatre.
Future productions should retain this commitment at their core, with an emphasis on clear story telling, contemporary references, audience participation, Scottish dialects and humour and excellent music.
Music should be appropriate to the story and, where appropriate, include a minimum of three chart hits from the 12 months immediately prior to opening night which should be performed as closely to the originals as possible, to give the production a ‘pop’ feel.
Modern production techniques should be employed where possible – projection, intelligent lights, etc.
Motherwell Theatre is part of the Concert Hall and Theatre complex within the Civic Centre campus in Motherwell town centre and is managed by North Lanarkshire Council Learning and Leisure Services. The theatre team also manages other venues in North Lanarkshire and consequently, the technical team will be working on other events during the pantomime season. A dedicated crew must be provided by the production company.
All marketing and promotional activity is undertaken by North Lanarkshire Council, including print design and production.
Payment to the production company is made in instalments starting at the end of week one of the run.
